Origin / History The Black and Tan Coonhound originated in America and is said to have been developed by crossing the Bloodhound with a black and tan Virginia Foxhound. Dogs of this breed have been bred to track raccoons and bears through treetops and over rugged terrain in the Ozark and Appalachian mountain ranges. These dogs are also known for being good at tracking mountain lions, stags, opossums and deer even on harsh terrain. The Black and Tan Coonhound tracks its prey using its excellent scenting ability and chases it up a tree and guards it until the hunter arrives.

The American Kennel Club recognised the Black and Tan Coonhound in 1945, making this breed the first variety of Coonhounds to be recognized by the club. Today, dogs of this breed are more widely used for hunting than for show.

Appearance The Black and Tan Coonhound is a powerful working hound with a large build. Dogs of this breed are well-proportioned and they have a finely modeled head. The upper plane of their skull is parallel to the upper plane of their muzzle. These dogs have pendent lips and black nostrils. Their teeth meet in a scissors bite. They have long pendent ears that fall gracefully in folds around their face, and their rounded eyes are hazel to dark brown in colour. Their tail falls freely and their chest reaches down to the elbows. Their coat is short and sleek.

Colours Dogs of this breed have a black coat, but their muzzle, chest, and legs are tan. These dogs should bear no other colour aside from black and tan.

Temperament These dogs are loyal, good-natured and eager to please. They are alert and very focused on their work. These dogs are passionate hunters that can be a bit aggressive, but they listen to their master. They can also be friendly and gentle with people. Black and Tan Coonhounds can get along well with older children, although they can sometimes play rough. This breed has two types: field and show. Black and Tan Coonhounds that are meant for the show ring are larger and less energetic than field types, which makes them better companions for those who do not wish to use these dogs for hunting.

Height and Weight Black and Tan Coonhounds are 23 to 27 inches high. These dogs weigh between 50 and 75 pounds. Male dogs of this breed are heavier-boned and larger than the females.

Common Health Problems Dogs of this breed are susceptible to getting afflicted with hip dysplasia. It's also important for owners not to overfeed these dogs because doing so may result in obesity.

Living Conditions These dogs should not be kept inside apartments because they tend to be relatively inactive when indoors. It's best for these dogs to be provided with at least a large yard where they can roam around and do some physical activities.

Exercise Requirements Black and Tan Coonhounds need much exercise, so owners must take these dogs out for long walks daily. They must be kept on a leash, though, because they have a tendency to follow interesting scents.

Training Requirements Dogs of this breed are intelligent, making them relatively easy to train. They may, however, get distracted easily by scents. It is important for the owner to be patient with the Black and Tan Coonhound. These dogs should also be encouraged to perform well. Training must be consistent and owners must make sure that they are firm with these dogs. It's also important for these dogs to be socialized well at a young age so that they will not be aggressive with other dogs and humans.

Life Expectancy The life span of these dogs is approximately 10 to 12 years.

Grooming These dogs are easy to groom and care for. Owners must brush the coat of these dogs occasionally. The ears of these dogs should also be checked and cleaned regularly to prevent ear infections.
